چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the personal, fracture, treatment and complication characteristics among patients with pediatric femoral shaft fractures attended at the pediatric orthopedic service of the Joana de Gusmão Children's Hospital. METHODS This was a retrospective cross-sectional study on a population consisting of patients with femoral shaft fractures, aged between birth and 14 years and 11 months, who were divided into four age groups. Information was obtained from medical records and was transferred to a survey questionnaire to present personal, fracture, treatment and complication variables. RESULTS The study population consisted of 96 patients. Their mean age was 6.8 years. The cases were predominantly among males, comprising closed fractures on the right side, in the middle third with a single line. Regarding fracture etiology, traffic accidents predominated overall in the sample. Most of the patients (74 to 77.1%) presented femoral fractures as their only injury. Conservative treatment predominated in the group younger than six years of age, and surgical treatment in the group aged 6 to 14 years and 11 months. The complications observed until bone union were: discrepancy, infection and movement limitation. The mean time taken for consolidation was 9.6 ± 2.4 weeks, varying with age. CONCLUSION The features of these fractures were similar to those described in the literature and the treatment used showed good results. The Joana de Gusmão Children's Hospital has used the treatment proposed in the literature for pediatric femoral shaft fractures.

Treatment of Pediatric Open Femoral Fractures with External Fixator Versus Flexible Intramedullary Nails
Background: In children, inappropriate treatment of open femoral fractures may induce several complications. A few studies have compared the external fixator with flexible intramedullary nails in high-grade open femoral fractures of children. The present study aims at comparing results of these two treatment methods in open femoral fractures. Methods: In this descriptive analytical study, 27 ...

Abstract Background: Femoral malrotation is one of the most common complications following closed intramedullary nailing, (IMN). We hypothesized that the patients’ position during surgery can affect the incidence and severity of this complication. The aim of the study was to compare the incidence and severity of femoral malrotation in patients with femoral diaphyseal fractures treated with IMN...
متن کاملRole of elastic stable intramedullary nail in the surgical management of diaphyseal fracture femur in children
Introduction: Femoral shaft fractures account for 1.6% of all paediatric injuries. In children 5 years or younger, early closed reduction and application of spica cast is an ideal treatment for most diaphyseal fracture. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing of long bone fractures in the skeletally immature has gained widespread popularity because of its clinical effectiveness and low risk of co...

متن کاملDiaphyseal femoral fractures in children treated with titanium elastic nail system.
Femur fractures are common long bone injuries in children which account for less than 2% of all paediatric fractures. Although these fractures are dramatic and disabling injuries for the child and parent, the good part is that they unite rapidly with minimal complications if aligned well. Various methods have been used successfully to treat these fractures, but they differ in their stability an...
متن کاملWhat do we know about atypical femoral fractures? Insights and enigmas.
Although the existence of atypical femoral fractures is well established and bisphosphonate therapy is thought to be a major risk factor, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Epidemiological data show that atypical femoral fractures account for only a small proportion of diaphyseal subtrochanteric femoral fractures, being about 100 times less common than proximal femoral fractures. ...
